Ulm is bordered to the east by the Missouri and Smith rivers, both popular fly-fishing destinations with ample populations of rainbow and brown trout. The Smith River is popular for floating, kayaking, and canoeing - so much so that floating is allowed by permit only, with permits issued through a lottery drawing held annually in February.
Ulm is located five miles south of First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, home to what is believed to be one of the oldest and largest buffalo jumps in North America.
